Exploring the story of Hagar from Genesis 16 and 21, reminding the church that God is “the God who sees.” Through Hagar’s experience of affliction, abandonment, and despair, we are introduced to a God who sees, hears, and comes to the rescue of the helpless. Though often overlooked, Hagar’s story reveals God’s compassion for the oppressed and His faithfulness to keep His promises. Pastor Joseph emphasized that God’s care is not limited to words alone but is demonstrated through His presence, provision, and steadfast love for His people.

The sermon highlighted how Hagar encountered God in the wilderness after fleeing mistreatment from Sarah and Abraham. There, God called her by name, acknowledged her suffering, and promised to bless her son Ishmael. Hagar responded by naming God “El Roi,” meaning “the God who sees me.” Pastor Joseph encouraged the congregation that the same God who saw Hagar in her distress still sees and hears His people today. Whether facing loneliness, grief, broken relationships, disappointment, or uncertainty, believers can trust that God is near to the brokenhearted and faithful to His promises.

The message ultimately pointed to Jesus Christ as the fullest expression of the God who sees and saves. Pastor Joseph explained that humanity, like Hagar, is helpless apart from God, wandering in the wilderness of sin and in need of rescue. Through Christ’s incarnation, death, and resurrection, God entered into our suffering to redeem us and restore us to Himself. The congregation was encouraged to trust and obey the Lord, surrendering daily to the God who sees, hears, helps, and faithfully keeps His word.
