Mission
-
Calvary Baptist Church’s mission: “to engage the city and impact the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”
-
This mission flows from the Great Commission (Matthew 28) — making disciples through baptism and teaching obedience to Christ’s commands.
Beatitudes Review
-
The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3–12) describe the nature of God’s people: poor in spirit, repentant, meek, merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers, hungry for righteousness, and even persecuted.
-
These are not commands but indicators of the transformed life of kingdom citizens.
Salt of the Earth
-
Jesus calls His disciples “the salt of the earth.”
-
Salt in Scripture represents not just flavor but purification, preservation, and covenant faithfulness.
-
To lose saltiness means becoming useless by failing to live distinctly as God’s people.
-
Compromised disciples lose credibility, becoming like “worthless witnesses.”
Light of the World
-
Disciples are also “the light of the world.”
-
Light reveals, dispels darkness, and points people to God’s glory.
-
A city on a hill cannot be hidden; true disciples cannot remain invisible.
-
Good works—daily obedience and visible righteous living—shine before others, leading them either to persecution or to glorifying God.
Connection to the New Covenant & Mission
-
Being salt and light reflects the new covenant reality: forgiven, Spirit-filled, transformed people living for God.
-
Isaiah’s prophecies of light for the nations find fulfillment in Christ and now in His disciples.
-
The mission is ongoing: to live distinctly, proclaim the Gospel, and shine Christ’s light to the ends of the earth.
Practical Application
-
The Beatitudes provide the framework for engaging the world: humility, mercy, repentance, purity, peacemaking, and enduring persecution.
-
Believers are always “on mission”—not just in church or outreach programs, but in daily life (workplaces, neighborhoods, relationships).
-
To hide our light or compromise with the world is to become “saltless salt” or “invisible light,” failing in our God-given purpose.
Closing Exhortation
-
The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.
-
Calvary Baptist Church must ask: Are we glorifying God in how we live and witness?
-
The call is clear: Be salt. Be light. Live distinctly. Shine visibly. Engage the city. Impact the world with the Gospel.
