Joel: The Day of the Lord is Coming

A prayer of thanks leads into week two of a Minor Prophets series focused on Joel. Using Judah’s devastating locust plague as the backdrop, the sermon explains that the disaster was God’s judgment and a warning of a greater “Day of the Lord.” Joel 1:1–2:17 calls God’s people to heartfelt repentance—“rend your hearts, not your garments”—and 2:18–3:21 promises near-term restoration (grain, wine, oil, joy) and ultimate hope: God will pour out his Spirit on all people, judge evil, and dwell with his people. The message ties Joel to Pentecost and the New Testament emphasis that salvation comes by calling on the name of the Lord, leading to Spirit-empowered transformation now and new creation later. Application: take sin seriously, repent genuinely, trust God’s mercy, and live as Spirit-formed witnesses while awaiting Christ’s return.
