Pastor Joseph marks Calvary Baptist Church’s Kickoff Sunday in the new sanctuary with a sermon from Acts 1–2 on the question, What makes a church truly a church? He reminded the congregation that while the building is new, God’s design for His church never changes. Looking to the birth of the church at Pentecost, he identified four essential marks of an authentic church: devotion to the apostles’ teaching, genuine fellowship, regular remembrance of Christ through the ordinances, and steadfast prayer. These are not simply traditions but the spiritual practices that form believers into faithful disciples of Jesus.
The sermon emphasized that devotion to God’s Word means both learning and obeying Scripture, while biblical fellowship is far deeper than casual friendship—it is a Spirit-created unity that leads believers to love, serve, and care sacrificially for one another. Pastor Abraham also highlighted the importance of baptism and the Lord’s Supper as continual reminders that the church’s identity is rooted in Christ’s death and resurrection. Prayer, he explained, is the lifeblood of both individual believers and the gathered church, demonstrating dependence on God for every aspect of ministry.
Pastor Abraham concluded that these four characteristics, while essential, are not the church’s final goal. The church exists not only to gather but also to be sent. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, every believer is called to be a witness for Christ in their homes, neighborhoods, workplaces, city, and around the world. As Calvary begins this new chapter in its new sanctuary, the congregation was challenged to embrace both spiritual formation and faithful mission—living as a church devoted to Christ and committed to making Him known until He returns.
